UK economy grinds to a halt

Economic growth in the UK stalled between April and June, figures from the Office for National Statistics have shown.

The period showed the economy was totally flat, ending 15 years of growth and suggesting the UK is headed for recession, which is officially classed as two consecutive quarters of negative growth.

The services sector grew by 0.2% in the three-month period, while manufacturing fell by 0.8%.

The news will add to the pressure on the Bank of England to lower the cost of borrowing, despite inflation standing at 4.4%.
